Brighton's Videk eyes big future

(November 17, 2003) - Videk, a Brighton-based company that grew out of Eastman Kodak Co. almost 20 years ago, makes sure that the U.S. Treasury gets it right.
The Treasury prints tax refund and rebate checks at high speed, sometimes more than 70,000 checks an hour. Each check gets scanned and inspected to ensure, for example, that the money amount correlates with the recipient.
Videk makes the equipment that performs the flying inspections and stops the check printing if something is wrong.
"The system can examine seven things on each check and do 20 checks a second," said Jim Reda, Videk's vice president of technology. "I've spent 20 years of my life on this and it still amazes me."
Last month, the U.S. Treasury awarded Videk a six-figure contract to upgrade the inspection system. This month, Northrop Grumman Corp. selected Videk to manufacture a high-speed inspection system for the U.S. Post Office - a multi-million dollar contract, according to company officials.
