ROCHESTER, NY - Videk, a leading manufacturer of camera-based reading systems for the printing and mailing markets, was allowed another significant U.S. Patent for their OCR/ OCV technology, it was announced today.

The United States Patent Office agreed to award a patent entitled "Improved Optical Character Recognition Method". This invention makes it possible to achieve high-speed detection and recognition of character strings that contain touching, overlapping or fragmented characters. Implementation of this technology has just been released in Videk's latest versions of their DocuVision™ and InserterVision™ product lines.
Videk holds a number of other significant patents for Machine Vision technology.  In the area of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Optical Character Verification (OCV) these include: "Character Recognition Method Using Correlation Search" US Patent 5,150,425; "Character Recognition Method Using Statistically Weighted Correlation" US Patent 5,159,664 and Character Recognition Method Using Optimally Weighted Correlation" US Patent 5,204,914.

"This new technology makes considerable improvements in the readability of documents printed with decorative and stylish fonts" said James Reda, VP of Technology at Videk. "With standard approaches, stylish fonts cause confusion and ambiguity in many reading systems. This invention will allow the marketing and art departments to have more freedom in their choice of fonts without sacrificing the machine readability of the document by using a Videk system."
