Inspect on Demand" Patent to expand ADF capabilities - (10/13/2003)
ROCHESTER, NY - Videk, a leading manufacturer of intelligent scanning and reading systems for the printing and mailing markets, was allowed another significant U.S. Patent for their "Inspect on Demand" (IODÔ) technology, it was announced today. IOD allows a vision system to automatically find and inspect variable data on documents regardless of location. With no training or set up of the scanning system, the on-the-fly inspection provides a higher level of automation of the digital print and mailroom and overall information for the ADF.
"The benefits to be derived from the commercialization of this technology over the next few years adding intelligence and automation to digital printing and mailing are analogous to global positioning satellite technology applied in navigation and cellular phone applications" says Tom Slechta, President and CEO of Videk. "Inspect on Demand" will offer the same level of simplicity and preciseness in locating variable data
that moves. Applications cover a wide range of uses, from protecting private personalized data in HIPPA-type documents to increasing productivity and quality of processing customized billing statements and direct mail marketing pieces."
The United States Patent Office agreed to award Videk a patent entitled "Automated Document Inspection System". The invention uses information contained in a data file or print stream to determine on the fly where to look on a document or mail piece for inspecting variable data independent of where it is printed or located. As the position of personalized information can vary from page to page, the scanning system dynamically captures information at any location without limitation or intervention from the user. For example, when printing high-value 401K statements or phone bills, variable data - such as account numbers, social security numbers or barcodes - can appear in different locations from page to page depending upon the total number of pages and amount of information on the individual's document.
A precursor implementation of this IOD technology is currently used in Videk's InViziCode™ Print System (IPS-6820). The IPS-6820 takes variable data directly from the print stream to automatically print and read invisible barcodes and/or invisible data. The next step in implementing Inspect on Demand techniques is enhanced full page scanning as being applied to IRS tax refund check printing at five U.S. Treasury installations currently using Videk's Print Verification Stand. Videk's participation as an Associate Developer of the new UP3I intelligent interface standard for all the hardware components in the digital print process will allow for extending the applications for Inspect on Demand technology into areas of integrity control, information security, auditing and print data verification. The next level of Inspect on Demand will build upon the above implementations, combining all the powerful features of data stream integration and full-page inspection, and bring about the full realization and power of the ADF.

About UP³I
A number of top players in the digital printing industry, with a core team from Duplo, Hunkeler, IBM, Océ, Stralfors and Xerox, joined forces to develop an open, expandable and intelligent interface standard for all the hardware components in the digital print process. UP³I - the Universal Pre- and Post-Processing Interface - will centralize and unify process control for all the equipment on the print line, laying the foundation for CCM (Computer Controlled Manufacturing) in digital printing.
As an open, expandable interface, the UP³I specification will establish a standard for process management and control. It is based on the industry standards IEEE 1394, SNMP and RFCs. Today's and future standards for workflow management like JDF or other job descriptions can be used to operate UP³I enabled process lines.
