VidekVision™ Check Inspection System Verifies U.S. Treasury Checks - (8/31/2000)

ROCHESTER, NY - A VidekVision™ camera system is being used to inspect checks printed by the U.S. Treasury, it was announced today.

The check inspection systems are being incorporated in-line with a fleet of IBM InfoPrint 4000 laser printers installed at check production centers throughout the United States. Examples of checks printed at these sites include social security and tax refund checks.

The check inspection system ensures that every check is examined for accuracy in printing at high-speed production rates exceeding 70,000 checks per hour. The previous vision system used by the U.S. Treasury was not fast enough to read every document - only every fourth check was read.

"Videk engineered a solution that makes absolutely sure every check is read and verified without slowing down the production process," said Tom Slechta, president, Videk.

As checks exit the IBM printer, they travel through the check inspection system which utilizes Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to analyze the check amount, check number, inventory control number and MICR number. When an inaccuracy is detected, the system initiates a flag signalling the presence of the faulty document which is subsequently reprinted. Every data field read by the system is sent to a data collection device where it is cross-checked against the original print file. The VidekVision camera system ensures accuracy for check recipients by using a real-time, integrated inspection system that reads, analyzes and verifies every check.

In addition to meeting the U.S. Treasury speed and accuracy inspection requirements, Videk engineered a portable stand solution that can be inserted directly in the paper path of any roll-fed printing system. It houses the vision system, is self-powered, and interfaces directly to IBM, Océ and other popular continuous forms printers. The portable stand can handle all popular paper weights up to 20-inches wide in pin-feed and pin-less configurations.

"The free-standing solution provides customers with added flexibility, allowing them to use the verification solution when needed or remove it when it is not required," said Jim Reda, vice president of technology at Videk.

Videk is an expert in vision-based electronic imaging and analysis technology. The company provides patented optical character recognition and symbology reading systems featuring the fastest and most reliable technology for seamless print verification/quality inspection, process control and audit. Videk also manufactures their continuous On-Line Particle Size Analyzer (Vision Sensor PSDA) which enables accurate measurement and Statistical Process Control (SPC) capabilities directly in the manufacturing process.
