Videk signs multi-million dollar contract with Northrop Grumman - (11/14/2003)

ROCHESTER, NY - Videk, a leading manufacturer of intelligent scanning and reading systems for the printing and mailing markets has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to provide Northrop Grumman with a new on-line print verification product, it was announced today. The new VerifierBX will be added onto the over five hundred mail sortation machines Northrop Grumman currently supplies to the United States Postal Service (USPS). The addition of the VerifierBX will greatly enhance the mail processing operation by verifying the quality and readability of UPU codes used for mail sortation in the mail production process.

"This contract once again demonstrates how valuable our highly skilled people are in producing winning solutions for our business partners, said Tom Slechta, president, Videk.  "It's all about performance. We entered this race as a dark horse and crossed the finish line in first place with the best product and the best support."

Northrop Grumman was awarded a contract in excess of one hundred million dollars to deliver the "Flats ID Coding System (FICS)" Program to the United States Postal Service, with the goal of improving the processing rate of bulk mail. As a part of the program, a new ID code or tag will be added to bulk, "flats" type mail.  Videk's VerifierBX, a compact, high-speed vision system will decode the tag and look for Bar Height, Bar Spacing, Skew, Density, Fill and Quality, to determine the overall readability of these mailing codes.  This important quality control technique, utilizing state-of-the-art line scan digital imaging technology, will help improve mail production rates by identifying poorly printed codes on mailpieces immediately.  By catching these early in the process, the errant mail is removed from the process for hand sortation.

"Understanding the needs of our customer and providing high value, cost effective solutions that address these needs is the cornerstone of Videk's business," said James Reda, vice president of Videk. "Working closely with Northrop Grumman engineers and the USPO, we were able to merge our twenty years of expertise and our highly developed technology base with the specific needs of this application and to produce a product that fits like a finely tailored suit. We are honouured to have been chosen as the supplier of this technology for Northrop Grumman's program with the USPS."
