Videk, Sure-Feed Engineering Demonstrate Invisible Ink Reading and Printing Technology at Production Speeds - (4/20/2001)

ORLANDO - A "read and print" beta application that integrates invisible ink technology at production speeds was demonstrated for the first time at the National Postal Forum in Orlando, Videk announced today. Previously, the solution was shown only in tabletop applications.

Sure-Feed Engineering, Inc., a manufacturer of paper-feeding accessory machines for the mailing and packaging industry, successfully demonstrated the read and print production mail process using VIDEKVISION InviZiCode™ invisible ink technology. Using a Videk DocuVision™ camera inspection system, an existing OCR data string was read from cut-sheet laser documents. The data was then converted to a data matrix code that was immediately output in invisible ink using an inc.jet imager from Gunther International. A Videk camera verified that the unseen code had been printed.

Later in the process, the invisible data matrix code was read and decoded by a Videk camera inspection system attached to a Sure-Feed inserter. That data was then sent to a control system embedded within the inserter that controlled the inserting process based upon the specific information in the code. In addition, the data was used in conjunction with a database to look up the proper address that was then automatically applied by an ink jet printer on the outside of the windowless envelope. A similar application will be demonstrated again at the MailCom trade show at the Atlantic City, NJ convention center, May 9 -11.

"This demonstrates to marketers that it is possible to incorporate all the data they require for accurate document tracking and integrity without making mail recipients aware of it," said Carl Dionne, systems coordinator at Sure-Feed Engineering in St. Petersburg, FL. "Many people at the show commented that the solution is 'exactly what customers want'." In the future, Sure-Feed plans to adapt the solution to read from continuous forms as well as from cut-sheet documents.

"There is no question that this application is absolutely in demand," said Tom Slechta, president, Videk. "The question in the past has been whether it is possible. We are repeatedly demonstrating that we can accurately - and 'invisibly' - move data directly from the print stream to the inc.jet printer. This solution makes it possible to create more personal and more private mail documents."
