Data From Vision System is Available in Real Time to Three Locations on Two Continents with Videk VisionAnywhere™ - (4/9/2001)
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Using Videk VisionAnywhere™ technology, Document Data Solutions (DDS) DataPoster™ is successfully reading and collecting optically scanned data from one site and making it available in real time over the Internet to two other global locations, it was announced today by Videk. The application is believed to be the first of its kind in the print/mail industry.
VisionAnywhere connects any number of Videk camera inspection systems remotely located throughout various print production operations to a single control center. VisionAnywhere uses TCP/IP to access these systems over any Internet or intranet connection. Information sent between systems is compressed using proprietary algorithms for fast, secure access. Without VisionAnywhere, the data that is collected locally is available only to that site.
Incorporating Videk VisionAnywhere's connectivity technology, Document Data Solutions is successfully digitally reading documents in its headquarters in New Milford, CT, while at the same time using DataPoster, sending the information to two other sites in California and India for subsequent analysis, said Robert Ellis, president of Document Data Solutions. Document Data Solutions is a systems integrator and reseller of Videk products.
DataPoster combined with VisionAnywhere enables production managers to oversee and gather data from video inspection processes throughout one plant - or in multiple plants at different locations - in real time over the Internet or an intranet connection. The solution provides instant, visible access and control from a single location. The application has three primary benefits, explained Mr. Ellis.
One, it enables companies to maximize the equipment and personnel within their print and distribution centers. For example, from a central location, a production manager can check the status of the connected vision systems, set up and modify jobs, share job setups among multiple systems, switch easily between jobs, alert operators to developing problems and perform remote system backups.
Two, it enables anyone within a company who is authorized to gain access to the collected data or pertinent information, for example, the status of a sensitive document or check. It also enables authorized personnel to track the location of an item or verify that only one copy of a document or check exists.
Three, the solution enables customers of DDS to receive better service and support of their vision and reading systems. With VisionAnywhere, DDS can log in remotely to their customers' vision systems to evaluate and solve problems in real time; schedule necessary maintenance and service at a time that is convenient for customers, and deliver and install software upgrades electronically.
"Fortune 500 companies have multiple print and distribution sites throughout the country," said Mr. Ellis. "This application allows someone to remotely view and understand - in real time - everything that is occurring at all the sites. A production manager can see which equipment is being used, what jobs are being run, and see the documents that have been scanned. Without this software, the manager will need to make multiple phone calls to each site to gather this information."
Using DDS DataPoster, the information collected also would be valuable to others in a company. For example, the auditing department could readily see which checks or documents have been printed and or mailed, without relying on production personal.
"Only Videk and Document Data Solutions could bring this solution to market," said Jim Reda, vice president of Videk. "We have more than 20 years of real-time machine vision experience. We know how to deliver solutions that work in even the most challenging industrial environments."
